Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was presented with this Award of Merit for his service as a member of the School Safety Patrol at St. Jude’s Elementary School in 1961. Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, would graduate eighth grade from St. Jude’s in 1961 before attending Power Memorial Academy, and later the University of California, Los Angeles. This offered certificate is printed with “Award of Merit / School Safety Patrol / Lewis Alcindor / is duly presented with this Award of Merit, in recognition of meritorious service/ to school and community as a member of the School Safety Patrol actively engaged / in helping schoolmates to avoid street and traffic accidents.” This unique certificate derives directly from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a personally hand-signed LOA from Kareem will accompany this item.
