This impressive display features an ornate postal appointment signed by Abraham Lincoln. In Lincoln’s era, a presidential appointment was needed to be able to operate a post office with annual revenue $1000 or more. As was his duty, President Lincoln took time out of managing the early stages of the Civil War to appoint Daniel Kellogg, Jr. assistant postmaster of Brattleboro, Vermont. In fact, the day Lincoln signed this document, August 29, 1862, the Second Battle of Bull Run was in its second day, being fought just miles from the White House. The 10 x 13 ½ inch document boasts a large blind embossed seal stamp of the United States. Dated August 29, 1862, the document has been signed in strong black fountain pen by both Abraham Lincoln and F.W. Seward, acting Secretary of State. The document has three horizontal and one vertical fold from being mailed in an envelope, none of which affects the signatures. The sheet shows light toning from age and the expected puckering where it was blind embossed. The signed appointment has been paired with a print of Lincoln along with a short biography. The document has been professionally matted and framed to 24 1/4 x 32 ½ inches making a visually outstanding display of our 16th President and it comes with an LOA from PSA/DNA (V05664) for the signature, which has been graded a MINT 9.
