The game of basketball was invented by James Naismith at what is now Springfield College in 1891. The game quickly began to grow in popularity, with the earliest collegiate games being dated all the way back to 1896 and by 1900, basketball had spread to many of the colleges across the country. Not too far from Springfield, Massachusetts was Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where the game of basketball caught on quickly.

George Grebenstein, from the class of 1907, was a former All-American basketball player at Dartmouth College. A four-year starter, Grebenstein led Dartmouth to a 16-2 record in the 1905-1906 season and was named National Champions retroactively by the Helms Athletic Foundation. Grebenstein was the first player in the Dartmouth College program to earn All-American honors.

Offered here is George Grebenstein’s Dartmouth College’s vintage basketball uniform – jersey and shorts, that date to 1906. The jersey is a flannel tank top and is a dark gray. Across the chest are the letters "B D B" in blue felt. There is no manufacturer's tag, but a small white tag, with the letter "G" embroidered in red, is on the interior rear tail. The jersey appears to have some dirt remnants on the front and sparse moth holes on the front and back. The matching shorts are also a dark gray and have three buttons in the crotch area, with the top button appearing to be missing. There are belt loops and a pocket on the right backside. The shorts appear to be covered in dirt. This is a tremendous piece of basketball history, dating to the early days of the sport.
