The 1932 Summer Olympics were held in sunny California, kicking off festivities at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The games went on in spite of the Great Depression, attracting more than 1,000 athletes from around the globe to Pierre de Coubertin’s brainchild. The United States dominated the Olympic competitions, winning 41 gold medals and 103 total pieces of hardware. This photograph shows the opening ceremonies at the packed-to-the-gills Coliseum. A quote from Pierre de Coubertin, “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part – The essential thing is not conquering but fighting well”, is displayed on the iconic arches of the Coliseum. This black and white photograph is displayed in a 48 x 10-inch framed display.
