The Hall of Fame centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. wore this navy Mariners batting helmet during the 1997 MLB season. The former first overall pick led the American League in homers in 1997, crushing 56 longballs with 147 RBI and a .304 batting average. Griffey received all 28 first place votes in the MVP race while winning a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger at the end of the season. Griffey’s 147 RBI were a career-high, and he came back in the 1998 season with a second straight year of 56 homers.
This American Baseball Co. helmet is a size 7 ¼, with the Mariners logo applied to the front. Griffey’s number “24”, an ABC logo, and a MLB logo are applied to the back of the helmet. The interior padding is intact except for the top of the head padding, which is no longer in the helmet. The date dial in the helmet indicates it was manufactured in April of 1997. A Diamond Collection sticker is located on the underside of the brim. Griffey has signed the brim of the helmet in silver marker. This item comes with a LOA from JSA for the signature (Z67464) and a LOA from JT Sports for the game use.
