By the summer of 1966, the 15 years of debilitating injuries and fast living was taking its toll on Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle. Though still, if not more so, the idol of almost every American boy, The Mick's career was rapidly drawing to an end, and 1966 would be his final productive season. Taped up like a mummy and silently battling pains and interior demons, Mickey managed to hit .288 that year with 23 home runs, including a dominating stretch from June 28th to July 8th where Mantle hit 11 home runs in 11 days. It would be the last roar from one of the game's most popular stars of its greatest era.

Presented here is this splendid size 44 New York Yankees professional grade wool blend flannel pinstriped home jersey manufactured by Spalding that was used by Mantle during the 1966 season. This jersey derives from the collection of Mantle’s team mate Clete Boyer, who in his LOA which accompanies this jersey and dated January 5, 1998 states “I was Mickey Mantle’s team mate from 1959 through 1966. After I had left the Yankees, I asked clubhouse man, Pete Sheehy for one of Mickey’s old jersey’s. He gave me Mickey Mantle’s 1966 home pinstripe shirt. It is made by Spalding, size 44, 1966 sewn in the tail, MANTLE sewn in the collar, and the number 7 on the back. It has been in my collection for many years.” Spalding was the uniform supplier for the New York Yankees during that era and this jersey displays moderate game use.

The front of this button-down jersey has the famous interlocking “NY” sewn on the upper right chest in navy felt. “Mantle” is embroidered in navy on a matching off-white felt swatch that is sewn to the inside of the neck-line. The buttons on the front of the jersey are still the original buttons with the top two buttons closer together, another distinguishing characteristic of a 1966 Yankees jersey. The sleeves are Set-In at 3 ½ inches with the four ventilation holes on the underarms. The bottom front left tail contains the blue Spalding tag with a red “44” tag adjacent. “66” is embroidered in navy directly to the jersey below the Spalding tag and the wash tag is below the “66” and has a “SET 1 1966” flag attached.

The back of the jersey has a restored navy felt number “7”. This replacement "7" was expertly placed over the original "7" outline to avoid any ghost imaging. The number “33” outline can be seen. The number “33” was a non-roster number for the Yankees from 1964-73 and with no traces at all of the 1969 “100th Anniversary” patch, this jersey was most likely used by the organization for spring training in 1967 or 1968. Despite the appearance of a restored “7” the game used experts at Mears have determined that this jersey was an original Mantle jersey from the 1966 season based on a couple key factors – 1.) The “Mantle” swatch on the jersey has been determined to be original to the jersey based on tracing and the counting of seam lines in the area that; and 2.) The “NY” crest has been determined to be original to the jersey. Given Mantle’s listed size 6’, 201 lbs., this size 44 jersey would be an appropriate size jersey for Mantle and is consistent with other Mantle Spalding and MacGregor products in the Mears database. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a Mickey Mantle game used jersey from what was arguably the last of his productive and legendary Hall of Fame career. This jersey is an all original Mickey Mantle game used Yankees pinstripe jersey with the exception of the restored#7 and it comes with a LOA from former New York Yankee Clete Boyer and a detailed LOA from Troy Kinunen and Dave Grob of MEARS (312710), who have graded this jersey a solid A7.
