Playing in his final All-Star Game, Cal Ripken Jr. homered to lead the American League to a 4-1 victory over the National League. Ripken was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Derek Jeter and Magglio Ordonez also homered for the winning AL squad. Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens were the starting pitchers, with each throwing two scoreless innings. Playing in front of his hometown fans in Seattle, rookie Ichiro Suzuki finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
