The Joe Cronin Award was established in 1973 as a way to recognize outstanding achievement in the American League. Cronin played the vast majority of his Major League career for the Junior Circuit’s Washington Senators and Boston Red Sox, making seven American League All-Star teams in a 20-season career that began in 1926. Cronin was a player-manager for the majority of his career, beginning at the age of 26 with the Senators. He won pennants with both the Senators and the Red Sox, and later served as the American League President from 1959 to 1973. In 1956, Cronin was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Offered here is the 1975 Joe Cronin Award presented to Rod Carew. The award was issued to Carew in commemoration of his fourth consecutive American League batting title. At the time, only Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby held more consecutive league batting titles. Carew would finish his career with seven American League batting titles, with a single-season high average of .388 during his 1977 MVP season. This award shows a silver baseball player statuette mounted atop a baseball and a trophy cup, all standing on a wooden pedestal. The award measures a total of 27 inches tall and stands on a 10 x 8.75-inch base. A detachable bat is included to be held in the statuette’s hands. A plaque on the pedestal reads “The Joe Cronin Award / Awarded Annually by the American League for Significant Achievement in Baseball Presented to / Rod Carew / On October 4, 1975 / For Winning His Fourth Consecutive Batting Championship, A Record Exceeded Only by Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby.” This award is in fine condition and is a tremendous display piece from the career of a Hall of Fame superstar.
