The American Football League contested its fourth championship game at the end of the 1963 season when the Boston Patriots travelled west to take on the San Diego Chargers for the league title. San Diego won the Western Division outright to advance to the title game, while Boston had to defeat the Buffalo Bills in an extra playoff game to reach the final. With the help of the bye week, San Diego rushed to a 51-10 victory on the back of fullback Keith Lincoln, the eventual MVP of the title game. Lincoln ran 13 times for 206 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and caught seven passes for 123 yards and a 25-yard score.
