Presented here is a ticket to the 1868 impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States. Johnson, a Democrat, clashed with the majority Republican Congress on the issue of reconstruction and a violation of the 1867 Tenure of Office Act. Articles of impeachment were drawn up in early March, with the first Senate vote on the matter occurring on May 16th. The Senate failed to convict Johnson of any crimes in two separate votes, allowing the North Carolina native to finish up his lone term in the White House. This was the first attempted impeachment of a president since the office was created in 1789, and the only instance of impeachment until the House Judiciary Committee approved the articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon in 1974. This offered ticket stub is for the Senate Gallery on May 4th, 1868. The ticket stub is green, and it has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA (21461988).
