Offered in this lot is a 1972 typed letter signed by former President Ronald Reagan while he was governor of California. Reagan is writing to “Mrs. Norman Moon” of Des Moines, Iowa. Mrs. Moon hired Reagan in the 1930’s to work at WHO Radio in Des Moines as a sportscaster, one of his first jobs in entertainment. While working in Des Moines, Reagan interviewed the singer Joy Hodges, who encouraged the future president to enter Hollywood showbusiness. This letter is typed on official State of California Governor’s Office letterhead and dated to March 7th of 1972. This letter includes numerous references to Reagan’s life in government, such as his exasperation with the minutiae of the job. He has signed this letter in blue marker as “Dutch”, a name he was bequeathed in Iowa and used only with a select group of close friends. This letter is a fantastic historical artifact, and it is accompanied by a LOA from JSA (Y84729).
