The Brooklyn Royal Giants were a constant presence in black baseball during the first half of the 20th century. Founded in 1905 by the owner of the Brooklyn Royal Café, John Conner, the Royal Giants initially operated as a barnstorming team taking on all comers. From 1923 through 1928, the Royal Giants played in the hallowed Eastern Colored League. The Royal Giants employed some of the greatest players of the era, including the Hall of Fame ace Cyclone Joe Williams, a member of their 1924 outfit. Other legendary Giants include “Pop” Lloyd, “Cannonball” Dick Redding, Frank Wickware, and a plethora of other mythic figures.
