Presented in this lot is an 8 x 10-inch photograph of the “V-J Day Kiss” between George Mendonsa and an unidentified woman in white. This has become one of the most enduring images of WWII on American shores, with the relief and passion of the moment viscerally captured by Alfred Eisenstadt. This photograph has been signed by George Mendonsa, who inscribed “VJ Day 8/14/95 NYC Times Square” in addition to his blue marker signature. Mr. Mendonsa recently passed away in February of 2019 at the venerable age of 95. Mendonsa’s then-girlfriend and future wife Rita Mendonsa, captured in the background of this photograph, has signed as well, inscribing “He never kissed me like that” in addition to her blue marker signature.
