In 2011, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was honored, alongside the Harlem Rens basketball team, with this Office of the Manhattan Borough President proclamation. The Harlem Rens were the subject of Abdul-Jabbar’s moving documentary On the Shoulders Of Giants, which examined their status as the nation’s first all-black professional basketball team in the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s. The Rens dominated all competition, both white and black, during the days of barnstorming basketball before the merger of the BAA and NBL in 1949. This proclamation declares February 9th, 2011 as “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar/Harlem Rens Day” in the Borough of Manhattan. This proclamation comes in a 14.25 x 20.25-inch frame and is accompanied by a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself.
