Michelle Akers and the United States Women’s Soccer Team won their second World Cup title in 1999, defeating China in a dramatic penalty shootout in the Rose Bowl. Akers, a Golden Boot-winning center forward in 1991, played the 1999 World Cup in the traditional number 6 position, guarding the defensive line and organizing attacks into the opponent’s third. Akers notched two goals in the 1999 tournament, scoring in the first half of a 7-1 win over Nigeria at Soldier Field in the group stage and slotting home the clinching penalty in a 2-0 victory over Brazil at Stanford Stadium.
The final match of the tournament at the Rose Bowl was a hard-nosed affair, with Akers leading a strong team performance against a China team that boasted the talents of Akers co-Player of the Century, striker Sun Wen. In a terse penalty shootout, Brandi Chastain lashed her spot kick past China goalkeeper Gao Hong to send the thousands in attendance into rapturous applause. Akers was named the Bronze Ball winner of the tournament and earned a spot in the midfield of the Women’s World Cup All-Star Team for her magisterial performances for the Stars and Stripes.
Offered in this lot is Michelle Akers’ personally owned 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Bronze Ball award. This trophy takes the shape of a bronze Adidas Tricolore soccer ball atop a slim pedestal. A plaque on the trophy reads “Michelle Akers / FIFA / Women’s World Cup / 1999”. This trophy measures 18 inches tall. Please note that the ball is partially loose from the base. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue and Outreach Inc.
