Michelle Akers, the outstanding central midfielder for the United States Women’s National Soccer Team wore this red road jersey during the opening game of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Group Stage against Denmark at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. The crowd of 78,972 set records for both the USWNT and Giants Stadium as the FIFA Women’s World Cup descended on the United States for the first time. Akers led a commanding United States performance in a 3-0 victory, with goals coming from Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, and Kristine Lilly in a well-rounded outing. The Stars and Stripes finished top of their group, winning all three games while scoring 13 goals and surrendering only one, in a 7-1 demolition of Nigeria.

With a come-from-behind victory against Germany in the quarterfinals, and a 2-0 defeat of Brazil punctuated by an Akers penalty kick, the United States reached a historic matchup at the Rose Bowl with China and their prolific center forward Sun Wen. With Akers controlling the game from her central midfield position, the United States took the game to penalties, where Brandi Chastain’s immortal spot kick handed the United States their second World Cup title.

This offered jersey is the United States red road shirt worn by Akers during the match against Denmark. “AKERS” and her legendary number “10” are applied to the back of the jersey. A second “10” is applied to the front of the jersey in white and blue. A Nike swoosh and a Team USA crest are present on the chest of the jersey. Below the badge reads “3-FIFA Women’s World Cup / USA 1999”. A star is located on the right sleeve. The shorts are navy with white borders on the end.
