United States midfielder Michelle Akers wore this white United States home jersey during the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. The former World Cup Golden Boot winner powered the United States to a second World Cup title on home turf, defeating a formidable China team in a dramatic penalty shootout. Akers scored a pair of goals in the tournament, notching the States’ fifth goal in a 7-1 demolition of Nigeria during the Group Stages before adding the crucial second goal in a 2-0 defeat of Brazil in the Semifinals.
The historic Rose Bowl hosted the World Cup Final, with over 90,000 fans cheering on the United States in the stands. The United States, playing in their all-white home kits, held China scoreless across regular and extra time despite Akers being forced off the pitch in the 91st minute. In penalties, Brandi Chastain’s heroic strike brought the World Cup title back to its original home. This was the second FIFA Women’s World Cup title for Akers, who was awarded the Bronze Ball and selected to the tournament All-Star team.
