When it came time to create an award for the best player in each postseason, it was only natural that you would name it after Babe Ruth. 2013’s winner of the award was Boston’s David Ortiz, who’s post season was, well, “Ruthian.” As Boston marched its way to a World Championship, Ortiz simply laid to waste every pitching staff who stood in his way – pounding the ball to the tune of a .353 average, blasting five home runs and driving in 13 runs.
His game-tying grand slam in Game 2 of the ALCS effectively sank the Tigers and in the World Series the Cardinals were so afraid of the damage he inflicted with his bat that they walked him almost every chance they got, enabling Big Papi to tie a World Series record by reaching base nine consecutive times. So, along with his World Series MVP Award, David Ortiz was the recipient of the Babe Ruth Award. The award measures 11 x 13 ½ inches and consists of a black wooden base on which is mounted an engraved silver plaque reading “THE BABE RUTH AWARD DAVID ORTIZ BOSTON RED SOX.” The award shows light wear from age and display and has the original Herff Jones sticker is affixed on the reverse. A “Ruthian” award to a real post season hero.
