In 1972 the Oakland Athletics began the first great baseball dynasty of the 1970s. They won World Series in 1972, 1973, and 1974, riding an incredible pitching staff and a scrappy band of hitters led by Reggie Jackson to nigh-unprecedented success. In 1972, both of the A’s playoff series went the distance, with a 3-2 series victory over the Detroit Tigers preceding a seven-game victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. With the exception of Game 6, an 8-1 Reds victory, each game in the World Series was decided by one run.
