The 1978 New York Yankees, led by the one-two pitching punch of 20-game-winners Ron Guidry and Ed Figueroa, won 100 games in the regular season. None of these wins were more exciting than the 100th, which came in the 163rd game of the Yankees season. Facing the Boston Red Sox in a one-game playoff to reach the postseason, the Yankees triumphed after slight shortstop Bucky Dent hit a rare home run against Red Sox starter Mike Torrez. In the postseason, the Yanks defeated the Royals in a four game American League Championship Series, setting up a Fall Classic matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees eased to a six game World Series victory, with October hero Bucky Dent earning World Series MVP honors.

23 members of the 1978 World Champion New York Yankees have signed this Official Lee MacPhail stamped baseball. Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson signed his name on the stamped sweet spot, while manager Billy Martin and Lou Piniella signed their names on the opposite sweet spot. Other signatures include Hall of Famers Jim Catfish Hunter and Goose Gossage; Thurman Munson, Chris Chambliss, Andy Messersmith, Rawly Eastwick, Bucky Dent, Ron Guidry, Dick Tidrow, Ken Clay, Don Gullett, Sparky Lyle, Graig Nettles others. This baseball coms with a LOA from JSA.
