Presented is a rarely offered 72-card complete set of R145 Gum, Inc. "Superman" non-sports cards issued in 1940. Superman was an instant success following his creation in 1939, and he has endured for three generations as the most popular super-hero of all time. On these phenomenal cards, the first son of Krypton is portrayed in dozens of ways: fighting evil, rescuing the distressed, and seeking justice as only Superman could. Rarely offered as a complete set (due to the difficulty of locating the "High Number" entries), our research has shown that less than a handful of these sets have sold at a major auction house in the past ten years. Highlights include: #'s 1 Superman (FR) and 72 Superman vs. Torpedo (PR). The "Low Numbers" (48; #'s 1-48) grade 10% EX, 60% VG to VG/EX, 30% GD to GD/VG (one lesser); the "High Numbers" (24; #'s 49-72) grade 8% VG, 38% GD to GD/VG, 54% lesser. Overall, the set grades 7% EX, 43% VG to VG/EX, 31% GD to GD/VG, 19% lesser.
