Led by manager Tony La Russa, Oakland won 104 games during the regular season before sweeping the Boston Red Sox, four games to none, to win the ALCS. Jose Canseco hit 42 homers and knocked in 124 runs, to go along with a .307 batting average and 40 stolen bases. Mark McGwire (32 HRs, 99 RBIs) and Dave Henderson (.304 average, 24 HRs, 94 RBIs) provided plenty of offensive support. Starting pitcher Dave Stewart won 21 games while closer Dennis Eckersley recorded 45 saves.
