After losing to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship series for three straight years of 1976, 1977 and 1978, the 1980 Royals finally returned the favor by knocking off the Yankees in a three-game sweep to reach the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Hall of Famer George Brett won the batting title with a .390 batting average, the highest since Ted Williams immortal season of .406 in 1941. The Royals would fall to the Philadelphia Phillies in six games of the 1980 World Series.
