The 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics were the first to contest women’s soccer as a medal event. The United States, led by all-time greats Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm, were the overwhelming favorites to win gold in Georgia and they did not disappoint. The Stars and Stripes defeated China in the gold medal match by a score of 2-1, getting goals from Shannon MacMillan and Tiffeny Milbrett. Akers netted the game-tying penalty late in the semifinals against frequent foes Norway before MacMillan scored the game-winning golden goal in the 100’.
Offered in this lot is Akers’ credential from the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. This badge, currently on display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame, features a photograph of Akers and “Games of the XXVI Olympiad” printed in both English and French. This offered badge is currently being displayed at the Soccer Hall of Fame and will be shipped to the winning bidder at the conclusion of the auction. If the winning bidder chooses, an arrangement can be made to loan the badge back to the museum. This credential comes with a LOA from Michelle Akers. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach Inc.
