Offered is a 24-card near set of T40 Hoffman House "Battleships and Signal Flags" non-sports cards issued between 1898 and 1902. Rarely offered in meaningful quantities, this production depicts the battleships and other vessels that were participants in the Spanish-American War. The cards show a photograph of the ship, with a signal flag in the upper left corner. The cards reverse lists the number (in Roman numerals, except for the last card which is blank), the title of the card, a brief paragraph about the card, company advertisement, printer and copyright at the bottom. Two different types of sizes exist for this series. The first type, the slightly smaller examples, advertises Hoffman House Little Cigars at "10 for 10 cents." The second type, the larger series, advertises Hoffman House Magnums at "10 for 15 cents." All of these examples are the former, smaller variety. Missing V for completion. Grades 13% EX to EX/MT, 58% VG to VG/EX, 29% lesser (mostly GD to GD/VG).
