Offered in this lot is a White House congratulatory letter signed by Bill Clinton and sent to USWNT legend Michelle Akers to commemorate the United States’ victory in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The veteran Akers led the USWNT to their second FIFA World Cup title in 1999, defeating China after a tense penalty shootout in the Rose Bowl. Included in this lot is an 8 x 10-inch photograph signed and inscribed by Akers, a typed letter signed and inscribed by Bill Clinton to Akers, and the envelope the items were sent to Akers in.
The letter in this lot is dated to August 5th, 1999, congratulating Akers on the World Cup title and expressing sympathy that the United States midfielder missed the team visit to the White House. Clinton has signed this letter in black marker, adding a personal inscription to Akers that reads “I hope you’re feeling better - As I said I know something about taking a hit for the cause - you’re as good as I’ve ever seen!” The 8 x 10-inch photograph in this lot shows the USWNT during their visit to the White House. Akers has signed this photograph in black marker, inscribing “99 WC Champs Visit White House * I wasn’t there due to surgery!” Finally the manila envelope originally containing these items is included in this lot. Akers has signed the envelope in black marker, sketching a star and inscribing “Letter from President Clinton after 99 WC”. This lot comes with a LOA from JSA (BB34219) and a LOA from Michelle Akers. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach Inc.
