Bobby Doerr's career spanned three decades, all spent holding down second base for the Boston Red Sox. As a 19 year-old rookie he muscled his way into a lineup that included Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin and Dom DiMaggio. In the 1946 World Series against St. Louis, Doerr hit a stunning .409 with a home run. As explosive as he was with his bat, it's his glove that was most remembered by the Fenway faithful. Five times Doerr led the league in double plays, tying the old record. His career fielding percentage of .980 was the MLB record into the 1960's.

This timeless Red Sox road grey flannel was worn by Doerr during the 1950 season and again in spring training in 1951 as he geared up for what would be his 8th All-Star season. The road jersey has "BOSTON" across the front in navy block letters. Like many teams, the Red Sox recycled their jerseys by stripping them and sending them to their minor league affiliates and/or re-using them for the big club for another season. This jersey was no different and the "BOSTON" is a modern restoration. Close examination reveals the outline of the earlier lettering. There is some staining on the front beneath the "ON" of "BOSTON". The manufacturer's labels are missing but the outline of a two tag system can be readily seen in the tail. The size and configuration match the Wilson labels used during the 1950 period during which the Red Sox wore Wilson jerseys. Attribution to 1950 season use can be determined in two ways. 1) The outline of where an arm band was removed from the left sleeve. The Red Sox paid tribute to deceased club vice president Eddie Collins with black arm bands during spring training that year. 2) During the 1951 regular season, American League clubs wore a 50th Anniversary of the American League patch. Close examination shows that this patch was never present on this jersey. The Red Sox Hall of Famer has signed the front of his old jersey in black markers adding "My game worn Boston uni". A classic example of the Boston road flannel worn and signed by the best second sacker the team ever had. This jersey comes with Letter of Authenticity from MEARS who have graded this Doerr gamer a 6 and a LOA from PSA/DNA (AA06114) for his signature. There is also an additional letter of provenance from noted collector Joel Platt, who is widely known to have the largest privately held sports collection in the world and obtained this jersey directly from Bobby Doerr. Platt states in his letter “the Bobby Doerr jersey obtained by you was given to me by Bobby Doerr at Spring Training when the Boston Red Sox trained at Winter Haven, Florida.”
