Darrell Royal served as the head coach at Mississippi State University (1954–1955), the University of Washington (1956), and the University of Texas (1957–1976), compiling a career college football record of 184–60–5. In his 20 seasons at Texas, Royal's teams won three national championships (1963, 1969, and 1970), 11 Southwest Conference titles, and amassed a record of 167–47–5. He won more games than any other coach in Texas Longhorns football history.

Offered is the Washington, D.C. Touchdown Club Award to the Outstanding College Coach of the Year 1969 presented to Royal.  The “Timmie” features a 10-inch silver plated sculpture of a young boy playing football in a leather helmet atop a 7 x 7½ x 7 ½-inch black laminated wood base with two silver engraved plaques, one with the name of the award and one with the recipient. Royal, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, led the 1969 Texas Longhorns to an 11-0 record in the Centennial season of college football.
