The 1958 Giants had the NFL Championship within their grasp but Johnny Unitas had other thoughts, driving the Baltimore Colts 86 yards for the tying field goal to set up the NFL’s first sudden death overtime championship. The Babe Parilli period style “Hutch” ball has contains 28 blue ink signatures including Phil Ring, Bob Mischak, Linden Crow, Don Chandler, Sam Huff, Pat Summerall, Jim Katcavage, Jim Patton, M.L. Brackett, Carl Karilivacz, Ken MacAfee, Kyle Rote, Bill Svoboda, Don Heinrich, Billy Lott, Cliff Livingston, Buzz Guy, Bob Schnelker, Al Barry, Jack Stroud, Emlen Tunnell, Charlie Conerly, Ray Wietecha, Frank Youso, Ed Hughes, Rosie Brown, Jr., Don Maynard and Jim Lee Howell. All signatures are bold except for Barry, Tunnell and Conerly which appears slightly lighter. Near one end of the ball is written “To Dad On His Birthday 8/24/58” which could only be ascertained as one of the best birthday gifts a father could receive, certainly topping the standard necktie.
