Hall of Ted Williams already had a legendary career with his 521 home runs and ridiculous .344 career batting average. Imagine what his numbers might have been had he not been called into military service during World War II and again toward the tail-end of the Korean War. After missing ** seasons due to his military service, Williams still carved out an elite career. Williams was recalled for military duty by the Marine Corps in January of 1952 and was given a hero’s sendoff by the Fenway faithful early in the 1952 season on “Ted Williams Day” which was highlight by the crowd singing Auld Lang Syne to Williams.

Williams would return to Boston and baseball in August of 1953 and prior to his return to the States, penned this letter to “Miss Evelyn Turner 418 Mendoza Ave Coral Gables, Florida” which was postmarked “U.S. NAVY BR. JUN 27 1953”. The letter reads “Dear Ev, Think there going to send me home!! The medics looked my ears over again + decided I should get the radium treatments to clear them + the only place is in the States, where it’ll be I don’t know yet. The request for my gransfer has been sent to the Commandant of the Marine Corp. + ought to know definitty in a couple three days. Don’t tell ANYONE cause you know where it’ll get. Wont be long I hope + I’ll be seeing you love T.” Williams wrote this letter in blue pen on this slightly toned, cream-colored paper. A wonderful insight to the greatest hitter that ever lived on his impending return from his historic military service. This comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A52896).
