Presented is a framed display of an original poster for the 1962 Columbia Pictures film, “Safe at Home” featuring Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. The 30 x 40-inch poster is printed in orange, green and blue on white paper, and features the Yankees players names across the top and an illustration of two baseball players at bat on either side of an illustration of a player sliding into home with a fielder and umpire.  The poster is displayed in a 38 x 48-inch black wood and glass frame.

The film is about a young Florida boy who lies to his Little League teammates, telling them he knows Mantle and Maris and will bring them to their team banquet. His attempts to meet his heroes during spring training by sneaking into the stadium and into their hotel room at the Yankee Clipper Hotel result in chaos, and he learns an important lesson about honesty. Filmed in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, Florida. Following their simultaneous assault on the single-season home run record during the 1961 season, Maris and Mantle were instantly cash cows on Madison Avenue and in Hollywood.

This one-sheet movie poster was issued to hawk the fence-clearing duo’s appearance in the film. The film also stars William Frawley and Patricia Barry, with appearances by New York Yankees pitcher Whitey Ford and manager Ralph Houk. Mantle and Maris were Yankees teammates from 1960 to 1966, but gained national prominence during the 1961 season, when Maris and Mantle, batting third and cleanup (fourth) in the Yankee lineup respectively, both challenged Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season record of 60 home runs. The home run lead would change hands between the two teammates numerous times throughout the summer and fueled intense scrutiny of the players by the press. Maris eventually broke the record when he hit his 61st home run on the final day of the season, while Mantle hit 54 before he was forced to pull out of the lineup in September because of an abscessed hip.
