Offered is an 8 ½ x 11-inch typed letter from world renowned scientist Albert Einstein dated June 10, 1939. Typed on Einstein’s personal stationary with raised type “A. EINSTEIN 112, MERCER STREET, PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A.” on the top center, this letter was addressed to “Miss A. E. Botthof, S. Baumann & Bros., 553, Sixth Ave., New York, N.Y.”.

The letter reads:

Dear Miss Botthof:

May I offer my sincere congratulations to you on the splendid work you have undertaken on behalf of the refugees during Dedication Week.

The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness. In these years of affliction our readiness to help one another is being put to an especially severe test. May we stand this test as well as did our fathers before us.

We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause.

It must be a source of deep gratification to you to be making so important a contribution toward rescuing our persecuted fellow-Jews from their calamitous peril and leading them toward a better future.

Sincerely yours,

    (Signed) Albert Einstein”

Einstein signed his name in black pen below “Sincerely yours,”. This paper shows toning and has two crease folds. There are rounded corners and some edge wear, but otherwise, this document displays nicely. Also included is the original envelope this letter was mailed in with the exact address listed in the beginning of the letter, a “PRINCETON N.J. JUN 12 9 AM 1939” postmark and a 3 Cents George Washington stamp. Einstein’s address is in raised lettering on the top left portion of the envelope. This incredible letter comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A25523), who have graded this signature a perfect GEM MINT 10.
