Carter has signed his name and inscribed “39th President” below his signature. Carter was elected President of the United States on November 2, 1976 and inaugurated on January 20, 1977. In 1982, he established the Carter Center to promote and expand human rights. He has traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor elections, and advance disease prevention and eradication in developing nations.
