Uruguay’s eternal captain Jose Nasazzi was presented with this gold-plated Olympic Games replica medal after Uruguay’s historic success at the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics. Nasazzi, a solid defender nicknamed “El Gran Mariscal”, captained Uruguay to four South American Championships (now known as the Copa America), two Olympic golds, and the 1930 FIFA World Cup title in the inaugural edition of the tournament. A stonecutter by trade, Nasazzi played for the renowned Uruguayan clubs Bella Vista and Nacional during an exemplary domestic soccer career.
This offered gold plated medal is etched with “Jose Nasazzi / Olimpico / 1924” and a high-relief laurel wreath on the front. Etched on the reverse side of the medal is a high-relief soccer scene featuring a player attempting a shot on net. The medal is attached to three interlocking chains. The history as presented to us was that the Champion Nasazzi used a chain with his pocket watch and with this medal. Our consigner originally purchased it from his nephew and he had explained this to them. This historic item is an incredible piece of soccer history!
