In 1972, Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams led the Oakland Athletics to their first American League pennant since 1931, despite the machinations and gimmicks foisted upon the team by the eccentric owner Charlie Finley, setting up a World Series matchup with the formidable Big Red Machine of the Cincinnati Reds. Williams proceeded to turn in one of the great managing performances of baseball history, dealing with the absence of star slugger Reggie Jackson to lead the Athletics to an improbable seven game World Series victory. Every game except Game 6, an 8-1 Cincinnati victory, was decided by one run, with the A’s picking up victories by scores of 3-2, 2-1, 3-2, and 3-2 in the deciding Game 7. Gene Tenace won the World Series Most Valuable Player award, crushing four home runs and knocking in nine of Oakland’s 16 total runs.

This offered World Series trophy is approximately 12 inches tall, and measures roughly 7 ¼ inches in diameter and celebrates Oakland’s first of three consecutive World Series titles. The names of A’s players are etched in the band encircling the trophy, and “OAKLAND A’S WORLD CHAMPIONS - 1972” is etched on the top of band as well. The list of players and coaches listed included “Manager – Dick Williams, Coaches – Pill Posedel, Jerry Adair, Irv Noren, Vern Hoschelt Trainer – Joe Romo Players – Matty Alou Gonzalez Martinez Don Mincher Mike Hegan Joel Horlan Ken Holtzman Tim Cullen Darold Knowles Rolling Fingers Dick Green Gene Tenace George Hendrick Bert Campaneris Dal Maxvill Bob Locker Angel Mangual Sal Bando (Capt.) Mike Epstein John Odom Dave Hamilton Dave Duncan Ted Kubiak Vida Blue Jim “Catfish” Hunter Reggie Jackson Joe Rudi – Equipment Man – Frank Ciensczyk Traveling Secretary – Tom Corwin Bat Boy – Ron Pieraldi”. A green plaque on the top of the trophy’s base notes the score of each of the Fall Classic games. A metal baseball sits on a brass ring that supports an ornate crown.
