They defeated the Houston Astros in the NLDS then went on to beat the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS to win the pennant. Ultimately, the Padres fell to the New York Yankees in the 1998 World Series. Greg Vaughn had a monster season for San Diego, belting 50 home runs while driving in 119 runs. Tony Gwynn was his usual self, batting .321. On the mound, Kevin Brown went 18-7 with a 2.38 ERA and 257 strikeouts.
