Although the Browns finished eighth in the American League, their owner Bill Veeck still knew how to entertain and draw a crowd. Veeck, had Leroy Satchel Paige sign with the Browns July 17, 1951. He immediately announced to everyone that the former negro league pitcher will begin the following night during the game against the Senators. In his first game back in the major leagues, on July 18, 1951, against the Washington Senators, Paige pitched six innings of shutout baseball before getting touched up in the seventh at age 45.
This baseball features 29 visible signatures all signed in black ink. The toned hide shows its age but the signatures of those including Hall of Famer Satchel Paige, Manager Zack Taylor along with 20 game winner Ned Garver, future Yankee Cliff Mapes, Sherm Lollar and a ton of future big-league stars make this scarce Browns team signed baseball a desirable collectable. The signatures come with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication.
