Offered is a silver metal stein with a glass bottom, presented as the second prize in an 1894 Central Park bicycle race. The 5½-inch high stein is engraved “YAA 2nd Prize 2 Mile Bicycle Race Fall Games 1894 Won by Ebenezer Hill Jr” in script.  The base of the stein is 4½-inches in circumference. Bicycle racing was the rage in New York and other Eastern cities in the 1890s, with numerous championship competitions at Central Park and other New York City parks. The bicycle craze in the late 19th century caused New York City park officials to quickly develop guidelines for this relatively new and growing pastime. It is assumed that the “YAA” engraved on this stein refers to the Yale Athletic Association, one of the oldest cycling organizations in the United States.
