On May 7th, 1964, in the 8th inning of a 9-3 game in Philadelphia, Phillies pitcher Art Mahaffey faced Eddie Mathews (with Hank Aaron was on deck) with two on and two out. The result of that confrontation was a 3-run blast by Mathews into the seats at Connie Mack stadium. This Official Nationa League Warren Giles ball - which displays considerable game use - was his 425th career home run and 3rd of the 1959 season. An inscription, "Ed Matthews (sic) 3 RBI, Homer 8th Inn for Mil / Thurs May 7th Score Phillies 9 to 6 / Connie Mack Stadium Phillies vs. Mil / 1964" has been placed on the sweet spot in an unknown hand. This baseball comes with a LOA from MEARS (314909), attributing this ball to Mathews 425th career home run.
