Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 until 1974 and the nation's 36th vice president from 1953 to 1961. He came to national prominence as a representative and senator from California. After five years in the White House that saw the conclusion to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, detente with the USSR and China, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, he became the only president to resign from the office.
Having served in one capacity or another in the White House for over a decade, President Nixon certainly became familiar with Steve Martini, the famed White House Barber. There are many photographs we have received that show Steve Martini and Richard Nixon together at the White House and at different events as well. Upon the completion of one of President Nixon’s haircuts, Mr. Martini collected his hair and placed it in this plastic vial with the label “Nixon” written in black fountain ink.
This lot contains that vial which possesses a lock of Nixon’s black hair. The lot also includes a framed photograph of Steven Martini and Nixon as well as a Newspaper article that references Martini as “the official barber of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon”. Also included is another newspaper article specifically pertaining to Nixon and Martini. A letter of provenance from Steve Martini Jr, son of the Official White House barber Steve Martini who collected the hair will accompany the lot as well.
