This ornate bronze trophy was given to the captain of the Uruguay National Soccer Team on the occasion of Uruguay’s international friendly against Portugal on June 26th, 1966 at the Estadio Nacional do Jamor in Oeiras, Portugal. This pre-World Cup friendly finished 3-0 in favor of the hosts, with Jose Torres scoring a hat trick for Portugal. Both teams would play in the 1966 FIFA World Cup later in the summer in England. Portugal, debutants in 1966, finished the World Cup in third place.
This offered trophy is bronze and features the coat of arms of Portugal in the center. The coat of arms for eight Portuguese colonies — Guinea, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola, Macau, Timor, Portuguese India, and Sao Tome et Principe — are arranged in a circular fashion around the central Portuguese crest. Etched on the back of this bronze trophy is “Portugal - Uruguai / Lisboa 26 6-1966”. This historic trophy is a fantastic piece of international soccer history!
