Presented is an attractive 72-card complete set of R145 Gum, Inc. "Superman" non-sports cards issued in 1940. Superman was an instant success following his creation in 1939, and he has endured for three generations as the most popular super-hero of all time. On these phenomenal cards, the first son of Krypton is portrayed in dozens of ways: fighting evil, rescuing the distressed, and seeking justice as only Superman could. Rarely offered as a complete set due to the difficulty of locating the "High Number" entries.
Highlights include: #'s 1 Superman (FR) and 72 Superman vs. Torpedo (GD).
The "Low Numbers" (48; #'s 1-48) grade 23% EX, 77% VG to VG/EX (including one lesser);
the "High Numbers" (24; #'s 49-72) grade 42% VG, 58% GD to GD/VG (including one lesser). Overall, the set grades 15% EX, 64% VG to VG/EX, 21% GD to GD/VG (including two lesser). As a point of reference on value, Goldin Auctions sold a similar, lesser-conditioned set for nearly $5,250 in their October Legends 2019 sale (lot #137).
