The 1948 Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League finished their season with a 114-74 record and were managed by Hall of Famer Casey Stengel. The Oaks would defeat the Los Angeles Angels in the playoffs 4-2 and then defeated the Seattle Rainiers 4-1 in the championship series to win the title. Offered here is the lineup card from the May 1, 1948 game when the Oaks were on the road. This yellow lineup card has a pre-printed order 1-9 with the names and positions in pencil. The lineup is “Holder L.F. Lavagetto 3.B Metkovich C.F Etten 1.B Scarsella R.F Combs S.S. Sodigiani 2.B Fernandes C W. Hafey P.” Stengel signed his name on the bottom in pencil. The back of this card has the “GROUND RULES” printed in black with a list of rules. “CASEY STENGEL 1948” is handwritten in pencil on the bottom. This comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication (A23681) for Stengel’s signature. Since most lineup cards were thrown out, it is likely that there are very few line up cards featuring Stengel as a manager in the year prior to coming to the New York Yankees and leading them through their Dynasty run in the 1950's.
