Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States and held the office of President with great distinction from 1981 to 1989, leading America through a period of great prosperity during an uncertain time in the world. Offered here is a two-page (front/back) handwritten letter by Ronald Reagan to his daughter Patti Davis after his presidency.

Written on his personal stationary with “Ronald Reagan” printed below the golden Presidential seal, this letter is dated “Dec. 24” and based on Reagan’s reference in the letter to his upcoming 80th birthday, the letter was written in 1990. The letter shows the sometimes-strained relationship he had with his daughter Patti Davis – who is Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s oldest child. The letter reads:

“Dear Patti

Alright I’ve quit bothering you but I had more in mind than arguing politics. The line in the song says it all; “The days dwindle down to a precious few.” On Feb. 6th I’ll be 80 yrs. Old

Your Mother and I are hard (sic) to understand the separation between us and our first born. It didn’t just happen with your growing up and leaving home. I can recall your mother coming home in tears after driving you to school. She couldn’t understand your complete silence even to the point of your not saying “good bye”.

Was it having to share with a new born brother? I remember a loving daughter who never let us leave the house without waving good bye from the window. We have some snap shots that reveal a difference in a little girl. We ask ourselves “what di we do wrong!” We were once a loving family. (over)

Well as I said earlier “I’ll stop bothering you” but I don’t understand the separation of our family. I recall a little girl sitting on my lap and asking me to marry her. Her mother across the room behind her signaled me to say “yes.” So I did and explained we’d have to wait til she was a little older.

The letter is in excellent condition, displaying only minor toning, crease folds from being mailed and edge wear and are stored in a custom 9 x 10 ¾-inch burgundy hard cover book that has printed in gold letter on the front “A PERSONAL LETTER TO HIS DAUGHTER”. Also included with this 2-page letter is the original envelope with Reagan’s Los Angeles return address and has handwritten Patti Davis’ Santa Monica, California send to address. The envelope has only the tear from when it was opened. A wonderful piece of presidential history that cannot be found in textbooks. This letter comes with a LOA from JSA.
