A throwback-type player Thurman Munson was a fiery competitor and born leader in the long lineage of Yankees legends. One of only 11 officially recognized Yankees team captains and the first since Lou Gehrig in the 1930s, Munson seems more about baseball’s black and white past than the Technicolor 1970s that spanned most of his playing days from 1969-1979. While the tragic end to Munson’s brief career most likely prevented him from being elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, he is considered nothing less than a god to Yankees fans who hold him in equally high esteem among the pantheon of legends honored in Yankee Stadium’s monument park.

Offered here is the 1971 Uniform Player’s Contract that has been signed by Thurman Munson in bold black fine-tipped marker and signed it “Thurman L. Munson”. This four-page document that is folded in the middle with print on the front and back, also has the signatures of then Yankees’ General Manager Lee MacPhail and American League President and Hall of Famer Joe Cronin. The date of this contract was February 21, 1971 and paid Munson $30,000.00 annually for that season. “American League of Professional Baseball Clubs” is printed in bold red lettering across the top with the contract between “NEW YORK YANKEES INC.” and “THURMAN MUNSON” of “CANTON, OHIO”. This document comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AF05864) for the signatures of Munson, MacPhail and Cronin.
