His nickname was Joe Cool, a testament to his displays of calm during "crunch time" in the NFL. He led his teams to multiple late game comebacks, both in college at Notre Dame where he led the Irish to the 1977 National Championship, then with the San Francisco 49ers where he helped lead them to four Super Bowel wins, including a last minute game winning drive in Super Bowl XXIII. After Steve Young established himself as the future for the 49ers, Montana was traded to Kansas City. Montana played in seven conference championship games, his last with Kansas City in 1993 where he wore this exact jersey. Montana wore this Wilson, size-42, Kansas City Chiefs away jersey when he started the 1993 AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, who knocked Montana from the game with a concussion in the third quarter. On the front, back and shoulders are Montana's number "19", and his name "MONTANA" is across the back on a white nameplate. The lower tail has the "Wilson 42" size tag with a "93" strip tag. Montana has signed his name boldly in silver Sharpie vertically up the “1” and inscribed “Game Worn Jersey, January 23, 1994, AFC Championship Bills 30 – Chiefs, 13” horizontally across the “9.” All signatures grade a ("10"). A LOA signed by Montana states “The accompanying and below pictured jersey was worn by me on January 23, 1994 in the 1993 AFC Championship Game vs. the Bills. Yours Truly Joe Montana." This lot includes a photograph of his conferring with the Chiefs’ coaching staff during the game accompanies the jersey. AN interesting aspect to this jersey are two hand warmers. Due to the frigid Buffalo temperatures in January (at kickoff it was 22 degrees with a wind chill of 12 degrees), Montana had specially made hand warmers, complete with a fur-type lining. What makes this interesting is there are separate warmers for each hand, the left hand going across the upper stomach area, with the right hand warmer down in the usual area along the lower abdomen. The photo on the Montana LOA shows him with his hand in the right hand warmer. This jersey displays excellent game use and appears all original and without any alterations. This is a tremendous piece of football memorabilia, game worn by one of the greatest, if not THE greatest quarterback of all time.
