On August 16th, 1954, an American sporting institution was created when the first issue of Sports Illustrated magazine hit newsstands. With a splendid photograph of Milwaukee Braves star Eddie Mathews at the plate, this gorgeous cover set the standard for several generations of Sports Illustrated renown. This issue contains articles about some of the most prominent sportsmen of the era, including a brilliant piece about a duel between the first sub-four minute milers, Roger Bannister and John Landy, at the 1954 Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. A sheet of replica Topps 1954 baseball card designs is also featured. This magazine comes in a leather presentation binder branded with the Sports Illustrated logo and “First Issue / August 16, 1954” in gold text.
