Offered is a 1920s-1930s-era Honus Wagner Co. Official League Baseball with original box. The white leather baseball with red stitches is stamped “Official League Ball” in blue, along with the blue stamped trademark seal “Honus Wagner Co. Pittsburgh U.S.A.” and “A97 Cork & Rubber Center”. The ball is accompanied by the original 2½ x 2½ x 2½-inch tan cardboard box it was sold in, printed in green and gold. The box features the caption “Honus Wagner Co. Official League Baseball Adopted by Leading Leagues” on two panels, the caption “Honus Wagner Established 1918 A famous name for all sports” on one panel, and “Honus Wagner Co. Official League Baseball” on one panel. The box top and bottom feature the caption “Honus Wagner Co. Pittsburgh, PA”. Wagner was a star shortstop who played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1897 to 1917, almost entirely with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wagner won his eighth (and final) batting title in 1911, a National League record that remains unbroken to this day, and matched only once, in 1997, by Tony Gwynn. In 1936, the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted Wagner as one of the first five members. He received the second-highest vote total, behind Ty Cobb and tied with Babe Ruth. Wagner ran a well-known sporting good company for many years, beginning in 1918. A sporting goods store bearing the name "Honus Wagner" operated in downtown Pittsburgh for 93 years before closing permanently in 2011.
