Eugene Franklin “Bubbles” Hargrave was a longtime catcher for the Cincinnati Reds from 1913 to 1928. Hargrave made his return to the Majors for the New York Yankees in 1930, where he appeared in 45 games and had a solid .278 batting average. Offered here is a payroll check from the New York Yankees dated “Sept. 27th” 1930 for the amount of $1,677.14”. Hargrave signed his name on the back of the check with the note “To be applied only to the account of E.F. + Hester W. Hargrave”. The back also has “Salary in full for Season 1930 1,696.64” and below “Mrs. Hargrave’s hotel bill at Ward-man Park Hotel 19.50 – 1,677.14”. The front of the check has “The American League Base Ball Club of New York, Inc.” and was made out to “E.F. Hargrave”. The check number is 1665 and it was also signed by Jacob Ruppert and Ed Barrow. This check has the punch holes for when it was cleared, which affects the Hargrave signature. This check his been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA (83467936).
