The 2016 season was a historic season for former Boston Red Sox slugging DH David Ortiz. His final season in the Majors, after helping lead the Red Sox to three World Series titles (2004, 2007 & 2013), also saw him pass the great Mickey Mantle on the all-time home run list in September. Ortiz, at the age of 40 finished the 2016 season with American League highs in doubles (48) and RBI (127), while also adding 38 home runs. Ortiz ended his career with 541 home runs, which is currently 17th on the all-time list.
Ortiz used this Marucci Papi34 Custom Cut III-LDM model bat during the 2016 and specifically for his 509th career home run. Ortiz hit his sixth home run of the season of White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon in the top of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in the game as the Red Sox erased an early 2-0 deficit to win 5-2. Ortiz’s home run in the fifth inning put the Red Sox in the lead for good at 3-2.
As would be expected with the hitting prowess of Big Papi, this bat displays outstanding game use and is un-cracked. There are ball marks, stitch impressions and cleat imprints present on the barrel. The handle has a yellow and black Lizard Skins to enhance the grip, along with a light coating of Mota Stick on the upper handle. The knob has “34” stamped in black and the bat’s manufacture date “02/01/16” stamped. Adding to this already exceptional bat is the silver marker signature of David Ortiz on the barrel and he inscribed “HR #509 5/4/16”. A wonderful opportunity to own a game used bat from Big Papi’s final season tied to a specific home run. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B10965) for the game use and who have graded this bat a perfect GU 10. There is also an MLB Authenticated hologram (JB075456), who authenticated that Ortiz used this bat to hit his 509th career home run of Carlos Rodon in the top of the fifth inning on May 4, 2016, and a STICKER ONLY from Fanatics (ZZ0020505), who authenticates that this was the bat used by Ortiz to hit his 509th career home run off White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon on May 4, 2016.
